One of the spring projects we wanted to tackle this year was the landscaping around the side and back of the house. Well, we recently had a sidewalk poured from the end of the driveway around to the deck. They had to use a backhoe to dig up the grass for the sidewalk, so it was the perfect time to get on the landscaping. My hard workin' mom came up on Wednesday and we got a head start before the weekend. When she got here we went straight over to the
Farmer's Market to pick up some plants. And wow, that is the place to go! We loaded up the Odyssey w/ some bushes, flowers and tree, picked up a shrimp plate (that was huge!) from the
seafood restaurant, and headed home to get to work. Jackson went down for a long (3 hour!) nap as soon as we got back, so we got a lot done. And let me tell you, my Mama is one mean hole digger! Check her out gettin' down and dirty...
She dug pretty much all the holes and I just put the plants in place. Sean got home around 5:45 and was impressed w/ all the we had gotten done. He knew the hard part was coming on Saturday when he was going to have to dig up all the mature grass from around the deck and next to Maggie's pen!
Here is the bed that we planted on Wednesday.
** So see the little tree there (above)? Well, that is actually not the tree that my mom and I planted. We were sold a much larger tree that would allegedly only get about 3 feet wide at maturity. When Sean, Jackson and me went back out to the farmer's market Saturday morning, one of the first things I did was stop by the stand we bought the tree from b/c I couldn't remember the name of it. Well, I got to talking to the man who ran the stand (not the guy who was there on Wednesday) and he informed me that the tree was going to get about 30 feet tall and 12 feet wide!! And we had it planted in a 3 feet wide bed! That would never work. The guy was very nice and offered to take the tree back, so we replaced it with one that was better suited for that space. But the real reason for our trip was to get the rest of the plants for the beds. We chose some really pretty azaleas and a knock-out rose. The lady who sold us the azaleas totally sold us on the rose -- she just raved about how great it was. We'll see... It's supposed to be really low maintenance w/ lots of blooms. That was enough to sell me! And my Grandma used to have a beautiful rose garden, so I guess I'll always have a sweet spot for rose bushes. So after a long day's work, with a couple of breaks for rain showers, our planting was complete!
My mom gave me this dahlia for Mother's Day. Isn't it so pretty??
